After much speculation, our Conservatives on Wokingham Borough Council announced that they had heard the views of residents, and will keep weekly bin collection, despite severe financial pressures.
The decision follows market research undertaken by the Council to gain an understanding of residents’ views on collection of household waste. Of the residents who took part in the research, 92% said that “Maintaining the current service in its current form” (i.e. weekly) was important. Over half of respondents said that they would not mind paying more Council Tax for keeping weekly bin collection, saying that they needed a weekly collection regime.
Following the collation of the market research, Conservative councillors argued in support of residents’ views, and agreed to maintain weekly bin collection.
Cllr Angus Ross, Wokingham’s Executive Member for Environment, said:
“Our residents have spoken, and we have heard them… We are actively seeking ways to recycle new products and materials, and new initiatives on communication with residents – all aimed at increasing our recycling rate towards the 50% target set nationally for 2020.”
