Wokingham Town Regeneration
The Wokingham Borough Council’s regeneration programme has won yet another award.
It recently won the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) award for Best Housing, Regeneration or New Build Initiative, beating off strong competition from the other finalists.
APSE Awards recognise excellence in the delivery of public services.
Councillor Charles Margetts commented “this award rounded off an excellent year for Wokingham Borough Council which also saw the regeneration of the Wokingham Town Centre win the prestigious Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Awards for Planning Excellence.”
The RTPI awards are the most established and respected awards in UK planning.
Councillor Margetts said of the regeneration of Wokingham “The regeneration of Wokingham has seen the council invest heavily in the town’s future and proactively seek to update the town. We have worked hard to build on our heritage and create a unique market town brand which differentiates itself from nearby shopping centres.”
As a result of its effort Wokingham has been successful in attracting key brands such as Everyman Cinemas, Starbucks, The Leafy elephant, Waterstones and many others.
The Elms Field part of the development created a new public square around a large new play park in an area as a centrepiece for the town.
The town centre redevelopment continues with the replacement of Carnival Pool with a much larger modern swimming and leisure complex which will also contain a concert hall and a new home for Wokingham Library.
