Friday evening, 26 February, saw the Bracknell Conservative Association welcome Sir Graham Brady, Chairman of the influential backbench 1922 Committee, to the second of their ‘virtual political suppers’ hosted by our MP James Sunderland. The supper was conducted via Zoom call and of course, since everyone joined remotely, the food and drink menus were entirely in the hands of individual members!
Over almost two hours, Sir Graham shared his unique insights into the complex workings of the 1922 Committee, explaining how a large part of his job was to speak ‘backbench truth-to-power’ whilst being supportive of Government.
He spoke about his interpretation of current political events throughout the UK including his lockdown philosophy and Scottish government matters and then he responded to members’ questions from the floor.
Following the appearance at the first of this year’s suppers of the Rt Hon David Davis MP, former Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, Gerry Barber the BCA Chairman said,
“The Association has been delighted to hear from two Conservative parliamentary big hitters at our recent suppers. We continue delivering a programme of virtual suppers to which all members are invited to hear from and share thoughts with, senior representatives of the Party.
As the Covid-19 restrictions are relaxed these suppers will revert to the normal delivery of face-to-face meetings delivered in convivial surroundings.”
